Construction Safety Week: Employee Highlight: Colin Harmon
In honor of Construction Safety Week, we would like to introduce Scott + Reid Safety Director, Colin Harmon. His areas of expertise include safety reporting, regulation compliance, crisis control, corrective action planning, risk management, coaching, and training.
We asked Colin a few questions to learn more about him and his role:
Have you always been interested in safety?
My stepdad owned a residential framing company and I worked with him a lot when I was growing up. Seeing how big of a role safety plays in a construction project always made me wonder about the safest way to complete a project.
What background and education led you into your current position?
Starting in residential construction when I was younger and completing two internships in commercial construction helped me get my start with some of the larger construction companies in the DFW area. After earning my degree in Occupational Safety and Health from Southeastern Oklahoma State University, I began my career in safety working for a commercial contractor throughout Texas.
How did you make your way to Scott + Reid?
While working with another company, the Safety Director for a mutual subcontractor recommended I contact Scott + Reid. I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to be Scott + Reid’s first Safety Director and I have never been happier in my career.
What is one safety rule that often gets overlooked or might be the most challenging?
Documentation. Everyone already has a lot of paperwork to deal with on a day-to-day basis. Making sure a project team comes together to put their safety plan on paper can be challenging but is one of the most critical parts.
Thank you, Colin! We appreciate you.
